Pre trip day: Pick up from Great Falls and transfer to Augusta.
Check into local motel (not included). Afternoon check of baggage and
re-organizing into duffle bags.
DAY 1 Early morning pick up and arrival in Benchmark just after
daylight. The wranglers should just be
finishing up with the saddling of the stock. After an introduction to safe
horsemanship, you will be introduced to your horse for the trip. Riders are
matched as closely as possible to their mounts according to individual skills
and abilities. Our stock is good, gentle stock. You should be on the trail
early in the morning, and riding into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area.
A 10-mile ride leads though lodgepole and aspen to rolling, open meadows of
the scenic West Fork of the Sun. We get our first glimpse of the red cliffs of
Indian Creek drainage, where the Chinese Wall begins.
DAY 2 Layover. Spectacular hike or ride up nearby Prairie
Reef; with an extraordinary view of the entire Chinese Wall. Exhilarating open
mountain top, great wildflowers, probably an offer of coffee at the fire
lookout.
DAY 3 A 16-mile ride along the stunning Chinese Wall from
Cliff Mountain to Moose Creek. Great chances for photographs capturing the
stretch of Wall and expanse of wilderness below. Our high-altitude camp
affords good probability of seeing evening wildlife.
Wall. Excellent opportunity to see elk, bear, mountain
goats, and mule deer. Endless exploration for hikers and camera bugs.
DAY 4-6 Fourteen miles down Moose Creek into beautiful North
Fork drainage. Gentle, open hills, scenic aspen groves and great trout fishing
provide base camp setting for following layover days.
LAYOVER DAYS These layover days may be used to take advantage
of excellent fly or bait fishing. The Sun River, superior for the novice as
well as the expert, holds predominantly rainbow trout with a strong cutthroat
population. Fish feed aggressively on many dry flies and small nymphs.
- Day rides or hikes are also always available. Options range from easy 2-hour
loops through river meadows and aspen groves to vigorous climbs into high
mountain basins. Good chance of seeing bighorn sheep on Arsenic Mountain.
North Fork provides great swimming holes for use in coordination with you
fishing buddies, please.
DAY 7 Ride 18-miles along the Sun River. Traverse meadow
plateau country, a portion of the Sun River Game Preserve and the flats of
Pretty Prairie to arrive at the trailhead, completing our trip loop.
We should be to Benchmark by mid-afternoon, and you can be to Augusta by 6:00
PM, checking into a motel with a hot tub to pamper your tired body after the
trip (not included).
