During the cooler months (any time except June-August),
we offer interested adventure enthusiasts some of the most challenging
riding available! Ranging from Headquarters at 5,000 feet, across the mountains at 7,000
feet, into the Gila Wilderness, and beyond, your riding will be a
combination of walk/trot and canter, hard and fast, steep climbs,
unbelievable vistas, rugged terrain and it's likely you'll do as many as
25 miles a day, through some of the most spectacular and pristine
country in the southwest. Very few have laid eyes on this country, it's
so remote. Apaches ruled this land! Believe me, these rides are not for
the inexperienced, timid or out of shape! This wilderness area is
rugged, rough and can be unforgiving. No cry-babies! We want this to be
a positive, memorable experience... so please be honest with us about
your riding skill level!! These
trips cover 15-25 miles every day, returning to Headquarters in the
evening for a hot shower, a tasty meal and a comfortable bed! Your horse
will be tough and willing, the weather cool and brisk. It's a wild ride
through wild country, often over the Pinos Altos Mountain Range and into
the Gila Wilderness. This is challenging riding over
rough terrain, so this trip is only suitable for
seasoned riders. The ranch prides itself on home-style meals using home grown, free-range,
chemical-free beef and buffalo dishes. Organically grown fruits and
vegetables are offered on our menu when in season and available. We promise breathtaking vistas, exciting horseback rides on seasoned
horses, satisfying meals, evening campfires and the Milky Way spread
across the New Mexico sky. ... ride your dreams!

What Can You Expect: After an early breakfast,
you'll leave Headquarters, with "hard-tack and biscuits" (meaning: your
lunch!). You'll return...whenever! Well, we'll try to get you back
before the sun goes down! This is "bush whacking" and "brush popping" in
the purest sense of the word. Once you're in the Wilderness, mechanical
devices are not allowed. So, you'll be carving your trails through the
brush, scrub and overgrowth often with small, compact hand saws. And,
it's a sure bet you'll remember the climb! This scenery is mind-numbing
and breathtaking! The challenge is real. Your horse will be tough and
willing, the weather usually cool and brisk, as you make your way toward
the Gila River! The trip headed for home will usually be fast-paced, completing this
incredible loop journey. Cooler months offer the very best time of year
for riding such as this. Crisp and exhilarating! You might end up
chasing a few cows as wild as this country, so keep yer eyes peeled!
Pull yer hat down, Cowboys and Cowgirls, and tighten yer cinch. . . Why
not add your name to our list of Ranch "Bunchers". What are you
waitin' for? Let's RIDE!
We expect you to be in good physical condition with
plenty of horseback riding under your belt. Before we take you out,
we'll make sure you have the right "stuff" to make the trip. Your safety
is our priority. Guests are responsible for providing rain gear, warm
weather outer apparel, and a spirit of adventure. All other riding
routines will be offered during these months, as well. Everyone has
options - there's always something to satisfy every riding level and
interest!
Regular ranch activities will continue, including cattle work and nature
rides, for all you folks wanting something less extreme! This working ranch in the Gila area contains some of the traditional
domain of the NDEE, Chiricahua Apache. Privately protected Indian ruins
and ancient petroglyphs can be reached by horseback or on foot. The ranch
provides endless opportunities for birding, geology expeditions, or
botanical exploration. You can pan for gold or search for arrowheads. Surround yourself with southwestern comfort and warm hospitality! Guests
are housed in private, rustic ranch houses which are filled with Western
art and interesting antiques. We purposely limit the number of guests to
provide you with an individualized, personalized, western-style adventure.
You won't be lost in another crowd! Ensuring you have a darned good,
southwestern time is what we're after!
