The Horses
at Dragoon Mountain
As there are 60 of them, we can't very well do a
paragraph on each one, but here at Dragoon Mountains we think a lot of our horses, and so we
thought to tell you a little about them.
They are mostly Quarter Horses, with a few Thoroughbreds and a couple of Arabs, Paints
and Appaloosas thrown in for good measure. We get our horses for their disposition, looks
and intelligence, not for the breed or color. They are happy horses. The wranglers are all
good horse hands, love horses and are kind to them without being sentimental, and so the
horses are relaxed and yet disciplined.
They work 15 hours or five days, whichever comes first, and get a day off, and then
work three weeks and get a week off, to run free on hundreds of acres of range. Most of
them are used for cattle work, as well as on trail rides, some in reining and cutting
clinics, and we think they all enjoy their work. They are a lot of what makes
Dragoon Mountains Ranch
the place it is!
