Andalusia -
Sierra del Chaparral Ride

Join us for a relaxing riding holiday in the sun of Andalusia. Stay at a small cozy "cortijo" farmhouse in a nature are that has been designated a national park and is home to roe deer, Spanish ibex, wild boar, stone martens, foxes, hares and many other wild animals. You may also see golden eagles and rare Spanish imperial eagles circling overhead. This is a one week holiday consisting of five days riding (between four and five hours in the saddle each day) on spectacular mountain tracks, through pine forests and along dramatic river valleys, and a rest day for you and your horse, with the option to spend the day in the enchanting city of Granada, with its fascinating old Arab quarter, the Albaicin, and the chance to spend time in the fabulous Alhambra Palace, built by the Moors.

Note:  Lunch and entry fees to the Alhambra in Granada are not included.
If you wish to visit the Alhambra Palace on the rest day you will need to book tickets well in advance. Tickets cost 10 euros each.
You can book tickets online at www.alhambra-tickets.es. Tickets have an entry time to the Palace. You should book tickets with a morning entry time between 8.30 AM and 2 PM.

Accommodations and meals:

We have three large comfortable bedrooms each sleeping two people, and two bathrooms. Our groups are limited to six riders to create a friendly "House Party" atmosphere. There is a swimming pool and several large terraces for sunbathing and relaxing. You are welcome to make use of the whole house, gardens and pool during your stay. Breakfast is taken on the terrace each morning, lunch is a picnic on the rides and dinner is either at the Cortijo or at one of the restaurants in Guajar Alto, which serve delicious home cooked dishes accompanied by the memorable local wine "Vino del Terreno".
Please let us know your dietary requirements at time of booking, and we will do our best to accommodate them.

The riders:
You should have ridden regularly for at least one year and be confident in the saddle. You should be physically fit, able to mount easily without the aid of a mounting block and to ride for up to five hours a day. Our rides are conducted at a leisurely pace (walking and trotting with occasional canters) We have a strict weight limit of 182 pounds (thirteen stone, 80 kilos). To keep our holidays informal and friendly, groups consist of a maximum of six riders. Your horse will be groomed and tacked up for you each morning, although you are welcome to do this yourself if you wish to. Help and advice is available should you need it. You will be expected to take off your tack and wash your horse down every evening after the days ride.


Itinerary
Sunday: You will be collected from Malaga airport and driven to our farmhouse "Cortijo Los Tajos" near the white village of Guajar Alto, a drive of about two hours. After a welcoming drink and a chance to meet the horses there will be plenty of time to relax and swim in the pool before a delicious barbecue on the terrace.

Monday: A ride up through the mountains and pine forests of the Sierra del Chaparral to a forest observatory located on the top of a high mountain with spectacular views of the mountains and valleys all around. Approximate riding time 4 hours.

Tuesday: A circular ride around the valley of the Rio de la Toba, with the chance of seeing both deer and wild boar. Approximate riding time 4.5 hours.

Wednesday: A circular ride through the Sierra del Chaparral past the high mountain peak of Cerro del Fuerte with wonderful views of the Mediterranean Coast below. Approximate riding time 5 hours.

Thursday
A rest day for you and your horse with the chance to visit the beautiful city of Granada. Here you can wander through the rambling narrow streets of the Albaicin, the old Arab quarter of the city, with its many Arab shops and tea rooms, and visit the Alhambra Palace, one of the most fabulous examples of Moorish architecture in the world and a place of stunning beauty. Come back to the present and you will find an excellent shopping centre and a wide selection of restaurants and tapas bars for lunch.

Friday: A circular ride in the mountains of the Sierra de las Guajaras passing through the picturesque white village of Guajar Alto with its many surrounding groves of fruit trees. Approximate riding time 4.5 hours.

Saturday: A ride through the dramatic Sierra de las Albunuelas following a beautiful river valley where herds of goats graze. You may also catch a glimpse of the rare Spanish Ibex. Approximate riding time 4.5 hours.

Sunday: After breakfast on the terrace you can say goodbye to your horse, before being driven to Malaga airport in good time to catch your return flight.
